Want to know which comics are trending each week and why? COVRPRICE.COM uses live sales analytics to identify and compile the most robust market price guide, highlighting the hottest comics each week. No opinion. Just data. Every week they feature a newly updated TOP 10 COMICS list. These trends are driven by rumors, fan-favorite covers, story-based content, and content-related news.
This week, The God of Hammers is BACK on the list with an official first appearance and origin. However, Tosin Oduyein’s first appearance in Black Panther #3 is all the rage and finishes this week’s TOP 10. Moon Knight’s heat is still hot and held two spots this week. MAUS denounces a Tennessee school’s banning of the award-winning comic, causing increased sales and market value. DEAD DAY is in development at Peacock, making it one of the first Aftershock titles to make it into our Top 10. A little jealous of Tosin’s market heat, fellow new Marvel characters Gaslamp and “Black Hulk” (a temporary nickname the market gave it), round out the rest of the list.
#ten BLACK PANTHER #3 TAURIN CLARKE (1:25) | WONDER | 2022 | There hasn’t been a deeper discussion (among comic book collectors) recently than TOSIN ODUYE’s first appearance in this issue. At this point, no variant has been mooted more than this 1:25, which went crazy with a raw FMV of $555. There are many variations that heat up on release, but this blanket broke every known rule. So what is driving this hype? First, Tosin is part of a more democratic tribe that split off from Wakanda and forged its own society. The critical difference is how they infuse Vibranium into their skin, like a tattoo that embeds them with unique abilities. Tosin displays super fast powers in this issue, although he may have additional powers. Of course, new characters are introduced frequently every month. However, the excitement around the character stems directly from other online sources reporting that Marvel is internally comparing the character to Miles Morales. Many ran with the article, touting and positioning Tosin as “the next Miles Morales”. This created an immense level of FOMO (fear of missing out) that we had never seen before. Admittedly, this problem surprised many, including retailers, with all the covers proving hard to find. The fire under this book has sparked MANY discussions about whether these prices will hold and whether or not Tosin will import, in the short and long term? The answer is complicated. This is the hottest new release so far, and we’re all looking forward to seeing where it ends up.
#9 THE NEW ANNUAL TEEN TITANS #2 | CC | 1983 | Vigilante on HBO’s PEACEMAKER is a fan-favorite character, and her newfound interest in the market has brought a lot of attention to this character’s first appearance in costume. There are unconfirmed talks of a possible Vigilante spin-off on HBO. However, this is most likely wishful thinking. Anyway, there was a high sell of $339 for a CGC 9.8 with commodities at a FMV of $27.
#8 MOON KNIGHT #1 | WONDER | 1980 | The highly anticipated MOON KNIGHT Disney+ series continues to ramp up this first issue of its ongoing series. The aftereffect of the trailer market had the most lasting influence on its first running run with this debut issue, with a high sale of $1,325 for a CGC 9.8 and a gross FMV of $199.
#seven STRANGE ACADEMY #15 HUMBERTO RAMOS | WONDER | 2022 | Returning to the list this week, Gaslamp’s first cover appearance is still selling like hotcakes with a gross FMV of $17.
#6 MOON KNIGHT #2 | WONDER | 1985 | As previously reported, the most surprising trend in the MOON KNIGHT Disney+ trailer was the confirmation of actor Ethan Hawke as Moon Knight’s obscure villain, Dr. Arthur Harrow. Its first and only appearance peaked at $155 for a CGC 9.6 with commodities at a FMV of $60.
#5 THOR #21 | WONDER | 2022 | The God of Hammers gets a full first appearance and origin in this long-awaited issue. 217 copies sold, a 7 day trend of 63%, and raws at FMV of $35.
#4 HULK #3 RYAN OTTLEY | WONDER | 2022 | Will “Black Hulk” be a Hulk? Or something else? Her first appearance in this issue has fans eager for those answers. Meanwhile, standard coverage is selling steadily for a gross FMV of $18.
#3 DEAD DAY #1 | AFTER-SHOCK BD | 2020 | According to Deadline, “Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for a television adaptation of Ryan Parrott’s comic book Dead Day.” This 2020 Aftershock comic took off like a rocket in the secondary market with a gross FMV of $16.
#2 MAUS: A SURVIVOR’S TALE #1 | PANTHEON | 1986 | According to CNN, “A school board in Tennessee has removed the Holocaust graphic novel ‘Maus’ from the curriculum due to language and nudity issues.” This story has been much discussed in all major news sources, as well as among collectors. Although the ban was quite controversial, this event was beneficial for this highly regarded and Pulitzer-winning graphic novel. This exhibit introduced millions of new readers to one of the most important comic books ever written. In its current impression, Copies is soaring from sites like Amazon. The collectors’ market has been no different, as collectors are now suddenly seeing the value of his first impression, helping him grow from $5 to his current gross FMV of $95.
#1 BLACK PANTHER #3 | WONDER | 2022 | Yeah, no surprise here. This first Tobin appearance moved hundreds of copies on the secondary market with the 9.8 pre-selling for $175 and a gross FMV of $40…and climbing.
